full text | link As a result of the residency in Terras de Miranda, in Picote, during the XIX Encontros da Primavera, Isabel Carvalho initiated and encouraged the continuation of a popular movement for the right to stargazing. In a location where darkness was supposed to prevail, there is a strong light contamination from neighboring cities, both in Portugal and Spain.
In a tone that was simultaneously poetic and pamphleteering, a text raising awareness about the problem of light pollution was read by two women from very different generations, in the Mirandese language. This was accompanied by an exhibition at the Ecomuseu Terra Mater of three panels with symbols depicting the animals most affected by excess light (insects), lighting equipment (lamps), the concrete buildings of hydroelectric plants (symbols of Modernity), and elements of the landscape.
