With this body of work, winner of the 12th Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso Prize, Isabel Carvalho set out to trace a history of caricature, paying tribute to the lesser-known facet of Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso’s practice — humour — which he explored through depictions of his well-known friends from the cultural and artistic circles of his time, as well as through parodies of certain social groups.

In Histoire de la Caricature — an installation composed of sculptures, drawings, and a poster — the artist places at the centre of the discussion questions such as: what does it mean to be the object of representation? Who holds the power to represent? And what are the aesthetic, ethical, and political limits of humour in art? Rather than seeking resolution or closure, the work invites an open-ended path of reflection.
