The clashes of time in a casted scent
21.11.2015 / 5.12.2015
captionsThe sensory experience offered here — through burning incense shaped into a specific form — results from an investigation into the combination of material and spiritual aspects shared across different times, geographies, cultures, and belief systems. What is proposed anew is a reconciliation between, on the one hand, a materialist view of peaceful coexistence with the physical world and, on the other, the aspiration toward exceptional existential states — a sense of “beyond.”
The incense produced represents the culmination of a search for a universal formula for blending materials (such as wood, charcoal, incense, and essential oils), aiming to fuse all times and all spaces into one.
The olfactory experience — evoked through the release of the incense's aromas — depends on the combustion and destruction of its physical form, which will gradually metamorphose and disappear over the course of the exhibition. It is through smell that the experience evokes a memory that feels simultaneously familiar (or vaguely recognizable) and unsettling (or nomadic), as it resists being anchored to any specific time or place one has previously lived. This state of suspension becomes the starting point for a moment of gathering — suggested by the shared experience of something in common.
