ISABEL CARVALHO
T-A-R-T-A-R-U-G-A
20.09.2015
In T-A-R-T-A-R-U-G-A (T-U-R-T-L-E), Isabel Carvalho presents the performative reading of an essay she wrote, which departs from the short story Babette’s Feast by Karen Blixen, focusing on the relationship between the characters Babette, Martine, and Philipa to explore themes related to artistic practice — “the limits of imagination, artistic choices, banalities and extravagances,” as the artist herself puts it.
The reading, marked by a discreet stage presence and the use of her own non-professional voice, reflects a recurring dimension in Carvalho’s work, where writing and orality serve as tools for critical reflection. In this piece, Carvalho engages the audience with key issues of contemporary artistic production, such as the value of amateurism, the relationship between art and economy, friendship, and the tension between rigor and imagination.
